The IICRC S500 defines Category 1 water damage as water that “originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose a substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure.” Examples can include:

Category 1 Water Damage Insurnace Claim

Wet drywall, carpet, pad, hardwood flooring, and more can and are oftentimes dried and salvaged on Category 1 water damage incidents.
Category 2 Water Damage Insurance Claim– Significantly Contaminated (“Grey Water”)
For a Cat 2 water damage insurance claims it’s even more important to bring us in as your local Public Adjuster. The IICRC S500 defines Category 2 water damage incidents as water that “contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans.” Examples can include:
- Dishwasher/washing machine discharge or overflow

- Hydrostatic pressure seepage (commonly occurs in basements or slabs)

A licensed mitigation company uses an anti-microbial spray and HEPA vacuuming to disinfect affected materials after category 2 water damage incidents.
Category 3 Water Damage Insurance Claim – Grossly Contaminated (“Black Water”)
The IICRC S500 defines Category 3 water damage as water that is “grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. For this type of water damage insurance claim, you really need to use a Public Adjuster who understands what needs to be done with your damaged property,” Examples of Category 3 water damage can include:
- Sewage
- Waste line backflows originating from beyond the trap
- Seawater
- Rising water from rivers/streams
- Wind-driven rain from hurricanes/tropical storms

Category 3 water loss contain grossly contaminated water. Your restoration company contractor should remove all affected cosmetic materials such as insulation, hardwood flooring, drywall, carpet padding, carpet, and cushions. A licensed water mitigation company will use an anti-microbial spray and HEPA vacuuming to disinfect affected items after category 3 water damage incidents.
